Works on Nature, Environmental Justice, Sustainability, and more!

Forever Wild is a collection of various poems, drawings, and other forms of art and activism that aims to be an ambitious and collaborative project celebrating the importance of nature, the environment, and the Ashley Schiff Preserve, located in Stony Brook University. This compilation also serves as a call to action to promote environmental justice & the preservation of nature.

This book was one of four winners of the 2022 Friends of the Ashley Schiff Scholarship, and was made possible by Sowad Ocean Karim, Kellianne Ticcony, and their mentor Dr. David Taylor.

Obtained a copy of the book from one of the many contributors of this book, and I have to say, the compilation is so beautifully written and composed. I especially liked some of the poetry in the book, as well as some of the paintings and the wire sculpture art too! Would recommend this book to more people, and am pleased to hear that the Ashley Schiff Preserve is in the works of gaining legal protection. Congratulations Sowad and Kellianne!

The individual stories that each of these works tell painted me a beautiful picture of how much nature and the Ashley Schiff Preserve means to the student authors. I really liked the poetry, photography, narrative and research pieces all intermixed. The plain-writing pieces discussing studies about the Preserve, the narratives and memoirs about how personal nature can be, and the beautiful writing that describes nature with a creativity that only nature can bring; all of these pieces come together to show all the different levels that Stony Brook students, and really students and people everywhere, engage with nature.

About the Editors

Kellianne Ticcony (She/Her/Hers)

Kellianne is a 22-year-old researcher, leader, environmental activist, and aspiring marine scientist from Rhinebeck, NY. Kellianne is currently a senior at Stony Brook University where she is a first-generation college student, double majoring in Marine Science and Sustainability Studies with a double minor in Environmental Engineering and Ecosystems and Human Impact. She is heavily involved on campus, holding several environmental jobs and leadership positions. Including being founder and president of Stony Brooks hub of the Sunrise Movement, Co-President of the Stony Brook University Environmental Club, Public Relations Coordinator for the Stony Brook Society for Woman in Marine Science, Hydrofarmer at the campus Freight Farm, and Chair of Sustainability and Infrastructure for the Undergraduate Student Government.

Sowad Ocean Karim (He/Him/His)

Ocean is a 21-year old worker, educator, organizer, social justice activist, and proud New Yorker. He is a fourth-year, first-generation student at Stony Brook University in the Pre-Med Track as a double major in Biology and Political Science and a triple minor in Environmental Studies, International Studies, & Health, Medicine, and Society. Ocean is heavily involved on campus as the 2022-23 Undergraduate Student Government (USG) President. Ocean is also a member of the Thacker Lab, where he is currently aiding efforts in identification and DNA sequencing of various invertebrates across many harbors, bays, and regions within Long Island Sound.
